Description: A rare and original issue of The Oakland Daily News for Friday, November 10, 1871 This Republican newspaper was founded in 1866 and was published daily, except on Sunday, until at least 1877 - delivered by carrier for 15 cents per week. At this time the Republican Governor of California was Henry Haight (for a few more days) and The President of the United States was Ulysees S. Grant. The paper covers national headlines and local political news and activities. Of particular interest in this edition is the latest news by Telegraphic Overland of the election results in which Tammany Hall boss William Tweed suffered extensive losses - see scan. Other news includes word from Mexico of spreading anarchy and an incident in Austin, Nevada is reported wherein a hotel owner's generosity was abused by his customers. An interesting note reports that several boys have escaped from the first California Industrial School (Reform School) in San Francisco worth $20 per head - see below This issue of 2 pages, 4 sides features a fascinating variety of advertisements including real estate sales and medicinal cures California newspapers of this early date are rarely seen.
