1895 Heavy Silk Brocade Men's Robe From F.I.T. & Letter Joseph John O'Donohue IV

Description: This luxurious robe is made from silk faille brocade with fuchsia velvet ribbon bands. It's lined in taffeta (lining is pretty good, some seam openings, wear under the arms, a few spots) and has fancy braided trim around the pockets with the same cording along the edges and making up the very long belt with tassels (belt is excellent). It has 3 rows of double breasted buttons on the top and it buttons to the waist, then hangs open. The back has a pleat that is opened to the waist. The velvet has wear with much of the pile rubbed off, the silk faille bands have a lot of wear to them (photos showing examples but not everything), heavily frayed on the fold of the collar at back of the neck and underarms. I brought it at actions years and years ago and just came upon it again. When I was taking photos of it, I noticed a stiffness in the pocket and there I found the letter written by the donor who is also listed as donor on the 2 FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC) labels sewn into the robe. His name was Joseph John O'Donohue IV. His Obit in the San Francisco newspaper in June 1, 2000 is an interesting read and Mr. Google will find it easily for you. It talks about him being an extremely wealthy socialite in NYC and known as the most beautiful boy. He spent his summers in Germany and before WW2 met and had tea with Hitler he did not like and apparently told him to his face that he didn't agree with him, which made Hilter mad at him. Also, it talked about the famous people he counted as friends. He blew through his fortune and moved go SF,where he still was extremely well liked and moved in the higher society circles even in his reduced financial circumstances. Ok, back to the robe.... It measures appx. 37-38 inches around the chest, across the back shoulder is 13 3/4 and 58 1/2 inches long. It's not falling apart as far as dropping pieces of fabric when you pick it up, but it is not wearable and only for display / collection purposes. It is a beautiful example of what an extremely wealthy man from The Gilded Age would have worn and is quite heavy. AS IS Thank you for looking at my auction.
