Description: 1911 Japanese YMCA San Francisco Postcard Historic RARE Postmarks: unknown Japanese town Feb. 6, MEIJI 44, and Yokohama, Feb. 7, 1911. Sender: Yamada ..Taro. Addressed to: Mr. T. Nakamura (Nakamura Tetsugoro) / J. Y. M. C. A. c/o / No 121 Haight St. / San Francisco. / California / U. S. A. The message in Japanese on the backside is unreadable to us, as it is written in an 'old' style using crude penmanship. The YMCA for the Japanese, located at 121 Haight St., along with the Japanese Presbyterian Church at the same address, was overseen by Dr. Ernest A. Sturge, a Presbyterian missionary to the Japanese in California, from 1886 to 1916. It is possible that our Nakamura Tetsugoro was a relative of Rev. John Junzo Nakamura of the Presbyterian church there. This is a notable piece of history from the early "Japantown" of San Francisco and warrants further research.
