This particular jacket has these additional features: * A chin strap. It is under the collar, as shown in the picture, and remains hidden until it is needed to raise the collar around the wearer's neck when going for a windy ride. * Leather armhole lining (see photo). * Rare early Harley Davidson patch. The original owner had the Harley Davidson patch professionally attached to the jacket. This is a beautiful, simply designed patch that complements the jacket, and it is in good condition. It appears to be rare: We have not been able to locate another patch of this exact design. This Sportclad is in amazing condition for a jacket that is more than seventy years old. The horsehide leather is still strong, supple, and beautiful. Marks of age and wear (cracks in the surface of the leather) can be seen mainly along the tops of the shoulders and the collar. Zippers and snaps (all original) work well and look good. We have had the jacket professionally cleaned and conditioned to protect and restore the leather to as near its original condition as possible. The gorgeous red wool lining is original and in amazing condition. Some small areas have been darned or patched. This beautifully designed motorcycle jacket was made by one of the best small makers of motorcycle jackets in the 1940s for sale by the J. C. Penney Company. The three great retail department stores of the time, Penney, Ward, and Sears, all commissioned the best quality motorcycle jackets from the numerous small independent jacket makers in the US to meet the growing demand for what was then a brand new type of outerwear. The Sears Hercules and the Penney's Sportclad are recognized by collectors as some of the highest quality original mid-20th century Perfecto-style jackets. Today's motorcycle jackets are mainly made for fashion -- they do not have the honest design, meticulous old-world craftsmanship, and high quality leather of the jackets from the mid-20th century.
