The first race of the season saw 40 cars compete for a weather shortened 149 laps on the 2.62-mile roadcourse. A.J. Foyt sat on the pole, and the attendance was 47,200. Richard Petty won the race by over 60 seconds when it was called early due to heavy fog. Finishing second was Bobby Allison, followed by Bobby Isaac, Ray Elder, and Hershel McGriff.
