This is a replica of the famous Heavy Bomber Aircraft used by both the USAF as well as the RAF during WWII. Known as the Flying Fortress, this plane developed a reputation for taking significant damage, and still getting it's crew home safely! The Royal Airforce had some issues with this plan initially as mechanical issues cause the abortion of many missions early on. Despite the US having great success, the RAF began to reduce its usage of the B-17 as a heavy bomber. As usage by Bomber Command had been curtailed, the RAF transferred its remaining Fortress I aircraft to Coastal Command for use as a long-range maritime patrol aircraft instead. A Fortress from No. 206 Squadron sank U-627 on October 27, 1942, the first of 11 U-boat kills credited to RAF Fortress bombers during the war. This model is one from the RAF Coastal Command w/ Call letters: FL459 J. It is a replica of an actual plane in the No. 220 Squadron RAF, stationed in Benbecula, in the Outer Hebrides.
