Description: Antique Turkish 'Siirt' Blanket (battaniye). Circa 1920. These blankets are made in the town of Siirt, in Turkey. They are a local tradition, woven on simple looms using Mohair wool from the local Angora goats. After weaving the face of the blanket is brushed with a steel comb t produce a very soft long pile. Traditionally, they were used as bedding for nomadic peoples and shepherds . These blankets make ideal throws for covering furniture or beds, they also make ideal hangings with their bold graphic design. Hand washed and ready for use or display. Uneven weave and texture consistent with age. Two places at the end where the weave has loosened. See photos. Size 66" x 32" I have two of these up for auction. See my store for another variation .
