THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN MY AUCTION THIS AUCTION IS FOR 70+ YEAR OLD POST WW-II MADE IN JAPAN TIN LITHOGRAPH FRICTION MOTOR ARMY ORDNANCE HELICOPTER(BASIC BODY) A friction motor is a simple mechanism to propel toy cars, trucks, trains, action figures and similar toys. The motor consists of a large flywheel which is connected to the drive wheels of the toy via a very low gear ratio, so that the flywheel revolves faster. The flywheel's axis is perpendicular to the direction in which the toy faces and moves. When the toy is pushed forward, the drive wheels engage the flywheel. Pushing the vehicle forward repeatedly spins this flywheel up to speed. When let go, the flywheel drives the vehicle forward. The flywheel stores the kinetic energy of the initial acceleration and propels the toy after it is released, by forcing the perpetual motor that revolves the kinetic energy. As the flywheel, unlike the spring of a pullback motor, is continuously rotating and not held, the motor may be "pumped up" by pushing the car repeatedly forward. Cragstan was a marketing and distribution firm from New York and imported post-war Japanese battery-operated and mechanical friction toys. The company's main focus was on toys with multiple -mechanical- actions, for example robots. Cragstan made sure the company name and logo appeared on their packaging of their tin toys, cars and robots in which they were sold. Usually, these boxes were highly decorated. Toys by Cragstan have more quality and are more detailed than other battery-OP toys. The fine quality, lithography, boxes and the more complex actions and movements helped set Cragstan apart from other toy companies. Cragstan appears to have operated from the late 1950's through to the late 1960's. It was always assumed that Cragstan faded because the owners died or it became unsuccessful, but it looks more likely that they just moved on to richer opportunities. Cragstan made a number of variations of this model helicopter with the bubble windshield. They made an Un-Named Helicopter, Highway Patrol and Police Dept. helicopters. Also, one of the rarer versions, the Army Ordnance model. These models are highly sought after as collectibles. They range in price from $100 for a working helicopter to $150 for a mint version with the original box. I have provided pictures of a very similar POLICE DEPT. helicopter to illustrate a complete, original model. This auction is for a Cragstan Army Ordnance tin litho model mechanical friction helicopter from the post-war 1950's. This is the basic body of the helicopter. It is minus the rotors, Also, the friction motor does not function correctly. Sold for parts or restoration. Priced accordingly. Some of these parts can be scavenged from other similar models. Now..
