He was primarily a landscape painter and his subjects were mainly coastal views in Yorkshire. He lived in London and Holmsdale Road Reigate. Holder is known to have travelled extensively in Europe, but also as far as South Africa. In 1917 he exhibited a view of Victoria Falls on the Zambezi at the Royal Academy. Edward Henry Holder paintings are with the Russell-Cotes Museum and Art Gallery, Exeter City Council, Usher Gallery Lincoln, Victoria and Albert Museum, Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery and York City Art Gallery.
