Description: American author and speaker ELIZABETH "LIBBIE" BACON CUSTER, wife of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer, scarce and highly desirable undated autograph portrait of the late legendary General killed at the fabled Battle of Little Bighorn. Libbie inscribes, "To my friends Patrick and Margaret Flood / Elizabeth B. Custer". Taken from an uncommon Brooklyn Eagle Press pamphlet for the "Westchester – Hudson River – West Point" region, featuring Matthew Brady's portrait of the "Picturesque and distinguished cavalry leader..." As was customary at the time, Elizabeth Custer had a personal assistant / companion / live-in housekeeper named Margaret Flood. Margaret and Elizabeth were extremely close, and Margaret lived with Libbie. Eventually, Margaret married and her husband Patrick Flood moved in with them until Libbie's death at the age of 90 in 1933. SIGNATURIST-INK has acquired several key historic original pieces emanating directly from Elizabeth Custer via Margaret Flood's estate, including a rare copy of her Libbie's Will, and Custer's final military promotion to Brevet Major General, among several others. Left nearly destitute in the aftermath of her husband's death at the infamous Battle of Little Bighorn, Libbie became an outspoken advocate for Custer's legacy through her popular books and lectures. Largely as a result of her decades of campaigning on his behalf, General Custer's image as the gallant fallen hero amid the glory of "Custer's Last Stand" stood for almost a century after his death. The Elizabeth Custer autograph has been thoroughly reviewed and CERTIFIED AUTHENTIC BY PSA/DNA AUTHENTICATION SERVICES EXPERT EXAMINATION and encapsulated inside PSA/DNA's proprietary sonically-sealed slab.. UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED GENUINE. Condition is as shown with toning, foxing and staining. Autograph portrait measures appx. 6" x 9" in 10" x 13" encapsulate.
