Description: This RARE vintage Folio Society book is in EXCELLENT condition with no markings inside or out and no attached bookplates. The spine is very tight and strong, very possibly unread after all these years. It certainly feels like it. The condition of this book is past excellent for the age, and really just in general. The only extremely minor imperfection I can find is that the very bottom corners of the spinal name plate are slightly curled a few millimeters upward. The slipcase is also in very good to excellent condition. The book is a 9.5/10 and the case is an 8.5/10. This is a rare treasure a serious book collector will really appreciate. The wavy effect that seems to appear on the fabric part of the cover in multiple pictures is only "Moir pattern". It occurs when a scene or an object that is being photographed contains fine, repetitive details that exceed sensor resolution. As a result, the camera produces strange-looking wavy patterns. It is simply an effect and doesn't exist on the book in real life. For anyone unfamiliar with Folio Society books, they are constructed using only high-quality materials with uncompromising methods by masters in bookmaking. All are wonderfully illustrated on gorgeous paper with deep fonts. For most people who are only familiar with generic Chinese-manufacturered, mass-produced books, the obvious quality difference is instantly revelatory. The Charterhouse of Parma is a novel by Stendhal published in 1839. Telling the story of an Italian nobleman in the Napoleonic era and later, it was admired by Balzac, Tolstoy, Andr Gide, di Lampedusa, Henry James, and Ernest Hemingway. It was inspired by an inauthentic Italian account of the dissolute youth of Alessandro Farnese. While in some respects it is a "romantic thriller", interwoven with intrigue and adventures, the novel is also an exploration of human nature, psychology, and court politics. The novel is cited as an early example of realism, a stark contrast to the Romantic style popular while Stendhal was writing. It is considered by many authors to be a truly revolutionary work; Honor de Balzac considered it the most significant novel of his time, Tolstoy was heavily influenced by Stendhal's treatment of the Battle of Waterloo in his depiction of the Battle of Borodino, forming a central part of his novel War and Peace. Andr Gide described it as the greatest of all French novels, while Henry James ranked it "among the dozen finest novels we possess".
