Description: "The Sisters" - painting by Francois-Claudius Compte-Calix (1813-1880), original engraving for Graham's by T B Welch (1814-1874). Calix was A French genre painter, exhibiting at the Paris Salon and the International Exhibiiton in Paris, 1867. Welch was an active portrait engraver, engraving portraits of George Washington, James Madison, Andrew Jackson (held by the Collection of the U S Senate), and many others. (see my Benjamin Franklin listing also engraved by Welch). Sheet 10 1/4 x 6 1/8", plate 6 5/8 x 5". In very fine condition; rough edge where print removed from magazine, tear LL corner, repaired and well outside plate image. These images are quintessential Americana. Graham's Magazine (1841-1858), published in Philadelphia, was notable in hiring, and featuring, the finest writers and engravers in its publications. Edgar Allan Poe became its first editor, his "Murders in the Rue Morgue" first appearing there.
