Please read the description carefully and review the photos. Ensign is one of the highest non-commissioned officer ranks in the Serbian Army and in some world armies. It is intended for higher non-commissioned officer duties, primarily in commands and institutions, as well as for some command duties (department commander duties and possibly platoon commander duties). A senior sergeant first class can be promoted to the rank of ensign when, in addition to other conditions, he spends at least 5 years in the rank and completes the appropriate specialist courses. In addition to the Army and Air Force and air defense, it is also used in the River Flotilla of the Serbian Army. The term ensign comes from the time when soldiers carried the flags of their country or unit during battles, as well as in peace. Those soldiers were called ensigns. Over time, it was introduced into permanent use in some armies of the world. In the territory of the former Yugoslavia, it appeared during the National Liberation War, when it was introduced into the NOV and POJ on May 1, 1943 as the first officer rank. Since 1952, the rank of ensign in the Yugoslav People's Army has been the highest non-commissioned officer rank (junior officer rank) until 1974, when the rank of ensign first class was introduced. The Yugoslav People's Army, also called the Yugoslav National Army, was the military of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and its antecedents from 1945 to 1992 and primary branch of Yugoslav armed forces. The origins of the YPA can be found in the Yugoslav Partisans of World War II. As part of the anti-fascist People's Liberation War of Yugoslavia, the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia (NOVJ), a predecessor of the YPA, was formed in the Bosnian town of Rudo on 22 December 1941. After the Yugoslav Partisans liberated the country from the Axis Powers, that date was officially celebrated as the "Day of the Army" in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFR Yugoslavia). In March 1945, the NOVJ was renamed the "Yugoslav Army" ("Jugoslavenska/Jugoslovenska Armija") and, on its 10th anniversary, on 22 December 1951, received the adjective "People's" ("Narodna").
