It can easily grow in water to 5 inches above the roots in an 8 inch or wider container with heavy loam soil. This iris will grow to 18” to 24" tall and has plenty of velvety, black-violet flowers with gold in the crest. Blooms from late May to June. A good grower that will spread quickly, hardy zones 3 - 12. Picture 1 shows a Black Gamecock iris that bloomed in our pond. The second and third pictures are plant size and shape with full roots and 2-5 bladed foliage. These photos of the plant are for your reference only and is not what you will receive. Plant as you would the lilies, but when adding fertilizer tablets, use 1 tablet for 1 gallon size pots and 2 tablets for 2 or 3 gallon size pots. Marginal plants should be lowered to a depth of only 1 to 3 inches. They grow out of the water and are usually found at the water’s edge.
