Mahatch Oldest Squaw California Arcata Native American A W Ericson RPPC Postcard

Description: This photo is very rare. The original images feature this woman with her husband sitting just to the right. You can see his arm in the photo. Other cards have been made featuring her husband in the same setting. Both cards say they are the oldest, so maybe they are both the oldest Californian Indians alive at that time. Possibly the 88 on the front is referring to her age. Neither 1888 nor 1988 make sense for the date of this postcard. *Postcard has a strong half circle stain on the bottom right. Definitely shows well on the backside. It does not affect the color of the image too much as the image is in brown tones and the stain is brown, but it is noticeable both front and back. There is also some spattering spots on the surface of the card that can be felt with a finger. I have not tried to clean them off in any manner, choosing to leave them, as they do not affect the view of the card too much. I have provided photos showing the light playing across the card so that the spots will stand out better in the photo.* Condition of postcard is consistent with age and storage. There may be some fading/yellowing and tanning and postcard may have darkened spots from being handled. Dings on the edges and corner wear is common. Card may have some small creases or other general wear. There may also be writing on front and/or back. Please view the photos/scans closely and ask if you have any questions.
