Angelou would work a string of odd-jobs before becoming a poet and writer including fry cook, streetcar conductor in San Francisco, and correspondent to Egypt and Ghana in the decolonization of Africa. Angelou was a prominent activist, working with Martin Luther King and Malcolm X throughout the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's. Angelou met Malcolm X in the early 1960's when he visited Accra, Ghana, and the pair would work together in 1965 to form the short-lived Organization of Afro-American Unity before X's death. Angelou was asked in 1968 to help organize a march by Martin Luther King Jr., but postponed, King's assassination taking place on her 40th birthday. The devastating losses would lead Angelou to write her first autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"."I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is an autobiographical piece of literature, the first in a seven-volume series that follows Angelou throughout her life. This volume explores various subjects including identity, rape, racism, and literacy. It also explores women's lives in a male-dominated society. The book would be nominated for a 1970 National Book Award and would remain on the NYT Bestseller List for two years. It stands today as an innovative work that has forged new literary avenues in memoir and remains regularly studied from highschool to universities.
