Description: The is a beautiful Grand Tour era handmade Italian inlaid Sorrento ware antique puzzle jewelry box. The box is made of olive wood, carved on the front to create a faux book library is in a shape of books. The spines have hand painted volume numbers an motifs, it is marked "Sorrento". The top lid has fantastic mico inlay work framing a central scene of a family traveling on a donkey. The interior is lined in a pink fabric. There is also an amazing secret to this box, a hidden base compartment that can be accessed on the bottom right side. Excellent workmanship throughout, this must have taken someone many hours to make! The bottom has a penciled notation of a name and is dated 1873 which is consistent with a grand era of European travel. The box measures 6.75 inches wide, 5 inches high and 5 inches deep. Nice weight and aesthetic, perfect to use for jewelry or trinkets. Good antique condition with light signs of wear and use, staining to interior fabric.
