Description: Salvia glutinosa is a perennial in the Liamiaceae family. Its native range is from Europe to Iran. Common names are Glutinous Sage, Jupiter Distaff Sage, and Sticky Sage. It grows wild in shaded forest areas, especially in mixed woods with lime and chalky soils. The leaves and flowers smell minty with a hint of lavender. The plant is covered with sticky hairs. It can grow to a few feet tall and wide. Bright green leaves 4-5 inches long covered in hairs and again sticky. The 1-2 inch flowers are pale yellow with maroon markings with two yellow stamens. This is an unusual color for a Salvia. It prefers to grow in part shade with well-drained, chalky soil. It will attract birds, bees, and butterflies. Zones 7-9 Germination Sow seeds on top of the medium and press into soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain temperatures around 75-80F. Germination is in 10-30 days.
