Over a career spanning more than three decades, she has developed a distinctive style characterized by expressive, thought-provoking, and emotional works. Her art often features figurative images of women and children, rendered in acrylics on textured black paper, canvas, or hardwood, and frequently incorporates mixed media elements. Before fully dedicating herself to art, Sandra earned a degree in education from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and worked as a kindergarten teacher. She also owned a quilt shop and, alongside her husband Jim, played a significant role in historic preservation efforts in Cedarburg. Notably, in 1971, they restored an 1864 woolen mill, transforming it into the Cedar Creek Settlement—a vibrant hub featuring an award-winning winery, restaurants, specialty boutiques, and artist studios. Sandra's artistic journey began with creating collages and assemblages before she transitioned into painting. Her self-taught background allows her to work with few restrictions, embracing chance as a positive force in her creative process. This approach results in layered works rich with meaning, often yielding unexpected visual connections that surprise even the artist herself. She describes her process as free-form, with no strict rules or boundaries, and enjoys experimenting with various techniques and media. In addition to her personal artistic endeavors, Sandra has been a pivotal figure in Cedarburg's arts community. She founded the Cedarburg Plein Air Painting Event, which has become a significant annual gathering for artists. Her work has been featured in various galleries, including the Woodwalk Gallery in Door County and the Cedarburg Art Museum. Sandra's dedication to her craft and community underscores her belief that art is an essential and passionate aspect of life. Sandra continues to create and explore new artistic avenues from her studio in Cedarburg, where she resides with her husband. Her work invites viewers to engage with visual stories, encouraging personal interpretation and connection.
