The Geneva Bible - 1599 Complete Edition, Old & New Testament: A Historic Treasu

Description: About this Item:At the time, this remarkable translation was one of the most widespread: its text accuracy, combined with innovative layout and features, made it the preferred Bible version among readers. English playwrights Shakespeare and Marlowe drew their biblical quotations from it.Previous Bibles, designed for church lecterns, were produced in the cumbersome folio format. The Geneva Bible, on the other hand, was a handy edition, about half the size of a folio volume. Thus, it was particularly suitable for personal reading and study, and much more affordable. The translators of the Geneva Bible made special efforts to preserve the sense and flavor of the original Hebrew. The name of God, Jehovah, appeared in some passages, including Exodus 6:3 and 17:5, and Psalm 83:18. Words that the translators deemed necessary to add were in italics, while additions made for grammatical reasons were in square brackets. In Scotland, the Geneva Bible quickly became the official version. It was widely used in England as well, and it appears to be the translation that the "Pilgrim Fathers" took with them in 1620 on their memorable journey to the United States.Matthew Parker, then Archbishop of Canterbury, called them "various prejudiced notes." King James I considered them "extremely biased, false, seditious."In 1604, King James authorized a new translation in hopes of eliminating the Geneva Bible from England. According to Alister McGrath, professor of theology history, "the greatest obstacle the 'King James Bible' encountered in establishing itself during the 17th century was the persistence of the popularity of the Geneva Bible." For many years, the public preferred the latter, which remained the official translation in Scotland. New editions appeared until 1644."An examination of the 'King James Bible' of 1611 reveals that its translators... were influenced more by the [Geneva Bible] than by any other English version," notes the British and Foreign Bible Society. In fact, many innovative features and expressions from the Geneva Bible were incorporated into the "King James Bible."Although eventually supplanted by the "King James Bible," or "Authorized Version," the Geneva Bible holds an important place in literary history. In addition to setting new standards for translation and layout, it remains a fundamental step in the revision of English Bibles. It encouraged people from different backgrounds to read and study the Bible, who otherwise would not have been able to approach it.
