Pat Russell has comprehensively recorded the history of its first 200 years in his book entitled A History of The Exeter Hospitals 1170-1948. This present volume draws frequently on Russell's History to set the scene for the ensuing 60 years that form the main part of this story. Since 1948 the activity at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (RD&E) has undergone an explosion of change and expansion. In this respect it has not differed from other district general hospitals but a record of the history of the RD&E during this time should be helpful to those trying to understand the complex changes that have occurred in the National Health Service since its inception in 1948. During its 2006/2007 session the Devon and Exeter Medical Society ran a series of lectures in which members of the consultant staff, a nurse (herself a professor and chairman of the Hospital Trust) and two local general practitioners, father and son from the same practice in Sidmouth, gave an account of the development of their own specialties in Exeter and its district. This history is based on research undertaken in preparation for those lectures but it also relies to a large extent on the many men and women who have worked, and who still work, in the hospital and whose memories and reminiscences the authors have plundered ruthlessly. Much use has also been made of previous histories written about Exeter's medicine. These include not only Pat Russell's History but also John Delpratt Harris' book The Royal Devon and Exeter
