Description: WW2 PLANNING MAP entitled "ST. BRIEUC" which was produced specifically for "21st Army Group" to be used for the ALLIED INVASION of Northern Europe. It features the important port of St.Malo and the Channel Island of Jersey, which was the only British territory to be occupied by the Germans during the War. 21st Army Group was a British HQ formation created in July 1943 and assigned to Operation Overlord. The group's reference can be seen above the print code in the main photo ("21 A Gp.") Such a reference does not appear on standardly issued mapping sheets. The map was printed in April 1944 ahead of the Normandy Landings as part of a very low print run of only 1,000. As such, it was clearly intended for high ranking officers and officials and would not have been taken into Battle. It differs significantly from conventional sheets in this series, having been stripped back of its contours and other coloured layers, and only retaining the blue layer indicating water features.Such maps can be used more effectively for the planning stages of major operations, and also for 'status report' style maps once the fighting begins. In these instances, new coloured layers can be overprinted to record Battlefield changes without cluttering the sheet and making it easier to interpret. In effect, they are operational 'templates' which I've heard described as 'grey scale' sheets. This is backed up by the use of the light grey colour used for all the other details on the map.The map scale is 1:250,000, and is based on an "Army / Air" edition of the War Office's GSGS 2738 series. In excellent condition. From a large collection recently sold off by Edinburgh University - hence ink stamping to margin. (Following both World Wars, the government distributed excess stocks of Allied maps, along with captured enemy examples, to various national institutions such as libraries, museums, universities etc.) Seller's Ref - 2U / 209
